Winter Rituals: Caring for loved ones (and Ourselves) Through the First Colds of the Season
As the cooler months settle over Perth, our home always shifts into a softer rhythm. The mornings feel slower, the air a little crisper, and without fail the first winter colds make their way into our household. This year, both of my boys fell ill within days of each other. Sore throats, sniffles, that heavy tiredness that only a cold can bring.
Whenever this happens, I find myself returning to the same grounding rituals simple, natural comforts that help us breathe easier, rest deeper, and feel held while their our bodies do the hard work of healing.
These aren’t cures. They’re moments of warmth, moisture, scent and care that make the sick days gentler for all of us.
Warm, Steamy Eucalyptus Baths
One of the first things I do when the congestion starts to settle in is run a warm bath, not hot just cosy enough to relax the muscles and create a soft cloud of steam.
This winter, I’ve been making fresh oat “milk” bath using the old‑school method:
Start by scooping whole oats into a clean sock, tie it off. Then add a few drops of Eucalyptus oil onto the sock (never directly into the water). Placing the sock under the running water as the bath fills, squeezing it gently, releasing the oats. The natural starches and emollients, turning the water silky and milky, Eucalyptus entwined with the steam carrying the scent softly through the room; helping to open airways without overwhelming the senses. It’s soothing, hydrating, and perfect for sensitive winter skin.
This allows the body to sink into the warmth, shoulders dropping, breathing slowing. It’s a small ritual, but it always brings relief.
Night‑Time Moisture & Comfort
Winter air can be dry, especially when noses are already irritated. At bedtime, I like to set up a steam vapour diffuser in the rooms not for fragrance, but for moisture and warmth.
The gentle mist keeps the air from drying out as the body sleeps, helping ease coughing and congestion. Keeping the room dim, warm, and quiet, letting the soft hum of the diffuser become part of the night‑time cocoon.
There’s something deeply comforting about knowing the air around you is supporting their rest.
Natural Rituals That Help Us Feel Better
Over the years, I’ve learned that healing isn’t just about medicine it’s about creating an environment that feels safe, warm, and nurturing.

Some of the rituals we return to every winter:
Fresh oat milk baths made with whole oats in a sock
Gentle eucalyptus steam (used safely and sparingly)
Moisture‑rich air at night to ease dry coughs
Warm blankets straight from the heater rail
Hydration; herbal tea for me, warm lemon water for the boys
Slow mornings with low lights and soft movement
Plenty of rest
These small acts don’t replace medical care; they simply make the journey through winter colds a little softer.
As winter settles in, I hope these gentle practices bring a little ease to your home too.
Stay warm, stay rested, and be kind to yourself as the colder days roll in.
